GEO in the agentic era:
from being cited to being actionable
Google’s public guidance still starts with SEO foundations. As browser agents inspect DOM and accessibility trees and handle multi-step work, Hong Kong SMEs also need readable data, understandable flows and reviewable permissions.
The durable GEO starting point is still verifiable SEO
Google’s public guidance for generative Search continues to point to ordinary SEO foundations and useful content for people. Pages should be crawlable and indexable, important facts should be stated in clear text, and structured data should match what is visible. Google also says there is no special llms.txt, AI markup or guaranteed GEO hack.
The first question is therefore not “how do we trick AI?” but “are our public facts accurate, complete, current and owned by someone?”
Why agentic search raises the bar
Google’s current documentation describes browser agents that may inspect screens, the DOM and the accessibility tree while helping users compare or complete work. Cloudflare also separates Search, Agent and Training crawler purposes. These documents describe capabilities and governance, not brand-ranking or citation promises. They do support a practical design inference: a website should be both readable and actionable.
Five reviewable checks for a Hong Kong SME
- Crawlable data: keep robots, status codes, sitemaps, canonicals and Chinese/English versions stable.
- Verifiable facts: expose the company name, services, market, prices or terms, limitations and contact route in text.
- Understandable flow: explain the next step for enquiry, booking, quoting or purchase; do not hide essential facts in images or animations.
- Completable actions: make fields, buttons, keyboard focus, errors and recovery understandable; require approval for payment, sending or permission changes.
- Reviewable evidence: keep versions, sources, dates, approvers and tests; one AI answer is not a long-term ranking.
What to test, and what remains unknown
Use fixed questions, markets, languages and dates to test whether a page is fetched, whether facts agree, whether a source URL can be checked, whether a contact flow completes and whether sensitive actions stop for approval. Keep Search Console, Cloudflare RUM and human agent tests as separate records.
There is no public evidence that these five checks guarantee citation by Google, Meta or OpenAI. UCP, WebMCP and other agentic protocols are still evolving. This is a reviewable preparation method, not a ranking or commercial-outcome promise.
