What ChatGPT dots means for GEO:
websites must be citable and safely actionable

OpenAI’s public information describes dots as always-on agents that can continue work. A website therefore needs a reviewable path connecting citable service facts with actionable enquiry flows, permissions and human confirmation.

Dots is workflow capability, not a search-ranking rule

OpenAI currently calls the product ChatGPT “dots” and describes connections to approved apps, Work or Codex Cloud tasks, background progress and a return to the user when a decision is needed. This is agent workflow capability, not Google ranking logic, and it does not mean a public site will be cited by dots.

Split the website deliverable into two layers

The first is citable: service facts, sources, dates, limitations and brand identity are clear. The second is actionable: an agent can tell what it may do, which fields it needs, which steps require human confirmation and how to recover from failure. Content, forms, FAQs, contact paths and internal version records can form one auditable route.

A starter fact pack for a Hong Kong SME

  1. A one-page service fact pack covering services, market, terms, update date and owner.
  2. Fixed questions and FAQs with sources, limitations and review status.
  3. An enquiry, booking or quote flow with required fields, errors and recovery.
  4. A permission matrix separating readable data, allowed actions, sensitive steps and mandatory human confirmation.
  5. Preserved versions, raw answers, approvals, tests and revision evidence.

Claims that private background work by dots delivers public ranking, traffic improvement or revenue guarantees are outside the official evidence.

Testable working hypothesis

If public facts and workflows are more complete, an agent may find a constrained next step easier to complete; this needs fixed-condition agent tests, human QA and failure-recovery records. It is not a public OpenAI ranking signal.
